Miyamoto: E3 Not For Core Games

17 07 2008

In this writer’s opinion Nintendo is embarrassed by their core gamers. This year’s E3 was all about appealing to the mass market. Miyamoto explains that the event is not for core games anymore

For a very long time, E3 was an event where — and certainly Nintendo included — catered specifically to the core gamer. Now we look at more … an opportunity for us to introduce new concepts and new types of play that we intend to bring to the broader audience, particularly because of the media that gathers at E3 now.

So while attending an E3 event like this, they might be given the impression that Nintendo is no longer focusing on the games that appeal to the core gamer, in fact we’re still working on many of those titles, but it’s just not the type of event where we’ll be showcasing that anymore.

That’s little comfort for people who were disappointed by Nintendo’s press conference. Looks like Nintrndo’s core game announcements will be restricted to the depths of the internet where the general public will never know they’re there.

that’s all very interesting… what do you mean by “embarrassed by” ?

Well, it still seems unclear, and I doubt Nintendo can claim to know for sure themselves, as to who really is getting the end information. By that I mean, it makes sense that Nintendo reasons that since the press is there they will disseminate information that will eventually make its way to a mainstream audience. However, I doubt that the information is going to get that far; at least not the original and accurate messages. The folks like myself who have been glued to IGN, Kotaku…WiiCast — we’re one thing. The mainstream I doubt is paying those outlets much attention.

Nintendo is a video-entertainment juggernaut, and who can question their precision in marketing? But I think they’re flawed in their logic on this one.

Well I guess the surprise Pikmin announcment is proof that they’re working on secret titles for core gamers.

Way to motivate your third party developers on what your priorities are.

Sounds like they’re making us the porno section at the back of the movie store.

Fair enough Miyamoto, as long as you keep making the actual great games and not abandon them while you are trying to “break the psychological barrier” between I-don’t-care-what. They are still doing nothing more than disappointing core gamers by missing such great opportunities to promote their games, and getting laughed at.

this seems more of a diss to E3 than to core gamers. there are several other gaming conventions, and i think nintendo will reveal more core stuff there. not trying to hype that up, but i believe that’s true.
