PS3 giving Wii a Run for its Money in Japan

7 07 2008

Here are the numbers, as reported by gameindustry.biz.

The past few months have seen the PS3 reap the benefits of a number of high profile titles not available to the Wii that may have boosted console sales, including Grand Theft Auto IV and the PS3-exclusive title Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots.

According to Enterbrain, Nintendo Sold 235,990 Wii units of in the five weeks ended June 29, while Sony sold 139,494 PS3 console units.

Is this bad news for Nintendo fans? Not at all. There are several glaring issues Nintendo has failed to fix such as voice chat, a frustrating online service, and storage space. Because they’ve been the undisputed market leader, Nintendo hasn’t felt the need to address what in their mind isn’t broken. Competition should inspire Nintendo to be more aggressive with both software and hardware gripes from the fan base. After all, Nintendo isn’t going to want to lose their current market domination that took them ten years to get back. Make sense?

I hope Nintendo will start to prioritize some of the complaints users are having.

Unfortunately though I fear you make some sense there. As much as we love Nintendo they do seem to make some very arrogant mistakes now and then, especially when they were market leader.

* The infamous monopolistic contracts of the NES days when they told developers ‘you can develop for NES’ but no one else

* Screwing over Sony with the Playstation add-on for the NES.

* Opting for Carts instead of CD’s for N64 (despite developers protests), as it protected their anti-piracy interests.

Hopefully E3 will have announcements of storage space expansions, more hardcore titles etc.
