Nintendo Dominates Month of May

13 06 2008

Ever since the current generation of consoles, Nintendo’s massive hardware and software success each month is no surprise. Even with a full month of fantastic GTAIV sales (the title has now sold 4.2 million units in US alone), Nintendo continues their substantial lead over PS3 and 360 in hardware sales.

Interestingly, although a number of analysts thought we might finally see the “GTA IV hardware bump” in May, that wasn’t really the case. PS3 sold 208.7K units while Xbox 360 sold just 186.6K units. The Wii easily took top honors again with 675.1K units. The DS put up another 452.6K unit sales, while the PSP sold 182.3K units (down about 10K). This is now the 4th consecutive month that the Wii and NDS have captured the top two spots.

Wii and DS games also took up the majority of the top ten in software sales.

  1. GTA IV – Xbox 360 – Take-Two – 871.3K
  2. Mario Kart Wii (w/ wheel) – Wii – Nintendo – 787.4K
  3. Wii Fit (w/ Balance Board) – Wii – Nintendo – 687.7K
  4. GTA IV – PS3 – Take-Two – 442.9K
  5. Wii Play (w/ remote) – Wii – Nintendo – 294.6K
  6. Super Smash Bros. Brawl – Wii – Nintendo – 171.1K
  7. Iron Man – PS2 – Sega – 130.6K
  8. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock – Wii – Activision – 116.8
  9. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Darkness – DS – Nintendo – 107K
  10. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time – DS – Nintendo – 102k
