Nights 2 Is Real! First Screens! Full Translated Interview!

30 03 2007

Foreign language magazine “Maxi Consolas” has the first images for Nights 2. Along with the images there is a brief description of the features:

Sega reveals finally the first images of NiGHTS Wii envisaged exclusively on Wii in the Portuguese magazine Maxi Comforted. This new opus of the series seems to preserve the same graphic style that the original play, one notes the graphics very coloured with many effects. Playable to 2 players, NiGHTS Wii was to propose an on-line mode, new characters, and new movements with Wiimote. The official advertisement of Sega should take place at the beginning of April, we will thus have right to more details on this play in a few days.

Translated Interview:
Q: How did the idea of creating NiGHTS for Nintendo’s new console come along?
A: I’ve been interested in making this sequel for as long as I can remember, and the moment seemed perfect to start working on it. This game is ideal to take advantage of the Wii controller’s potential.

Q: Will we get, once again, inside the dreams (and nightmares) of Claire and Elliot, or are there new human characters whose dreams we’ll be able to visit?
A: Just like the first game’s story, the new NiGHTS happens inside a dream world, and its story will follow the adventure of those children. I hope to announce further details in the coming months.

Q: Will the main character (also called NiGHTS) be alone in this mission, or are there new kinds of Nightmare-people to control?
A: I can already confirm that NiGHTS will be the main character, and that he will have new habilities which will be explained later. As for new characters, I can’t reveal anything yet. You’ll have to wait and see.

Q: Which new flight manoeuvers will this charismatic figure be able to perform?
A: NiGHTS will have a considerable number of acrobatic movements, many of them never seen before, for the player to perform easily using the Wii controller. You can count on loops, spins, and other manoeuvers which will be kept secret for now.

Q: In which ways does Nintendo’s new console attract you?
A: I am particularly enthusiastic about witnessing all of this technological advance, and about knowing that, as a programmer, I can create games in the new consoles which, a few years ago, I was only able to dream of.

Q: We’re real fans of this character. Do you think that he will still be able to be interesting to the public, after all these years?
A: Above everything, I hope that NiGHTS fans like this game as much as the First one. I’m confident that, with all the new features I’m hoping to include, it will also attract a new player base, not yet familiar with this character’s world.

Q: What can we expect, regarding game modes?
A: Besides a single player mode, familiar to everyone, there will be a two-player mode and certain special online functions.

Q: Do you intend to take the inspired NiGHTS experience to other platforms?
A: So far, this new NiGHTS game is a Wii exclusive.

Q: What other classic franchises, developed either by you or Sonic Team, would you like to bring back to life?
A: When I created NiGHTS, I didn’t see it as a classic franchise, but I always hoped I would be able to dedicate it a sequel when the right moment came. For know, this is the only game series I’d like to see people talking about once more.

I am now super excited for this game. Co-op? Online? Count me in. The original “Nights into Dreams” was and still is one of my favorite games of all time. The screenshots of the Wii version look great, There’s lots of good lighting, nice smooth character models and some great design. Don’t believe me? Head over to Jeuxfrance and check out all of the scanned screenshots.

Access Denied!

30 03 2007

Well according to Kotaku all of the E3 invites have been given out and no, we were NOT invited. Oh well, looks like we’ll have to focus our coverage on the much cooler PAX and “E for all” expos. Maybe we’ll get lucky next year. Don’t worry though, We’ll still be covering all the public info that comes out of E3 and including it in the Wiicast.

Wiicast Episode 34!

28 03 2007

This episode was a lot of fun to work on. Instead of staying at home, we decided to go out to a local country western bar to get drunk. I like the way it turned out…Wonder Woman references and everything. No viewer mail this episode because of the two reviews. And we’re not really sure where “Shirley” came from. Enjoy!

Feature: Our Most Wanted Virtual Console Games

26 03 2007

This was originally going to be an episode of The Wiicast but i was having trouble locating good footage for all the games. In a time where obscure classic games are within our reach, I’d like to add my two cents into the mix. These are some forgotten games I played growing up and would love to see them make a comeback via the Virtual Console. Here’s the list in no particular order.

Kid Niki: Radical Ninja (NES)
Before Katamari, Japan released plenty of oddities that made it to the US. Kid Niki is one of those games. KN is a platform game released on the NES. The object is to guide Niki through different levels, connected by a world map, to save someone. The game itself has a great cartoony style and strange boss battles (see video). My kingdom for a re-release!

Chakan: The Forever Man (Sega Genesis)
During the dark time of 16bit machines when games like “Crue Ball” and other Metal/Death games were being released, Chakan was born. Released in 1993 on the Sega Genesis, Chakan put players in the role of The Foreverman. Two swords hack and slash through enemies with the greatest of ease. Chakan is a tough game. It’s mainly a platforming game with some great art and level design and a “Killer” soundtrack. In fact, it’s one of my favorite game soundtracks to date. Unfortunitly, Chakan was not meant for this world, although a sequel was in the works for the Dreamcast, development never got past some beta footage.

FlashBack (SNES/Genesis)
Part platform, part puzzle, part action. Flashback was in incredible piece of software for it’s time. 2D animation never looked so good on a console before Flashback. You are stranded on a strange world evading your captors. Will you escape? Armed with a gun and an impressive move set, you’ll have to try. I have a bad feeling that this game will never see the virtual console…mainly because it was published by Sony Imagesoft…oops!

Jet Force Gemini (N64)
Before Halo, there was only Jet Force Gemini. Developed by Rare in the middle of the 64’s life, JFG is still one of the best shooters available for any system. Not only is the gameplay great, but being from rare, you know the art/graphics and story are all amazing as well. Choose between three heroes to save the cosmos!

Sonic CD (Sega CD)
No Sega CD games have graced the Virtual Console yet but we can only hope that this will be the game that kicks it off. Sonic CD is hands down the best 2D sonic game. Really. The game is huge with 2D levels featuring 3d elements such as ramps and loops. Personally I’d bee more than willing to shell out 800 points for this game.

So how about you guys? What are some games you really want to see come out on the Virtual console?

Jobo’s Weekly Virtual Console Predictions!

26 03 2007

User Jobo42 on the IGN boards has recently been doing a weekly VC prediction thread. Sometimes he’s right, sometimes he’s not, but it’s always fun!
Full Post Here
Check out the whole tread for videos and more fun stuff.

Here’s JoBo42’s weekly predictions!

1. Zelda II
http://youtube.com/watch?v=k2UDIKaSAaE
Synopsis: Link saves a princess and frees a land from evil. Original!
Recommendation: Yeah, as long as you don’t already own it and/or you don’t have the GC collection.

2. Starfox 64 (skeptical)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=VvkOExiRidY (scratch one bogey!)
Synopsis: Take the talons of fox (yeah, I know. Falco ^^ on the brains) and save the Lylat System from evil space demons and such…bad guys.
Recommendation: As said above, skeptical but if it comes…GET IT GET IT GET IT!!!

3. Galaga (either this or gradius)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=EtYksFpY_Bg
Synopsis: I’m guessing you are just fighting space ships.
Recommendation: Yeah, if you like top-down shooters and annoying sounds, but otherwise, pass it.

4. Zombies Ate My Neighbors (here we go again…)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=EDBunSH04_U
Synopsis: Play as a kool cid (heh, I switched letters…A TWIST!) that tries to save his neighborhood from a horde of zombies. Think of it as dead rising, but in a neighborhood, and with 3d glasses, and no crazy people.
Recommendation: I don’t really know on this one. Looks cool, but seems a bit on the boring side. Up to your opinion this time.

5. TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles)
http://youtube.com/watch?v=5NWygbzmQrA
Synopsis: Four freakish creatures save the world from evil ninjas and a human Wolverine fanboy.
Recommendation: Yeah, awesome game.

Well what do you guys think about the predictions for this week?

Pedophilia Jokes, Gay Bashing and Bad Taste: This week’s 1up Yours Podcast

24 03 2007

This week I (begrudgingly) listened to the 1up Yours podcast hoping to hear more about “Boogie”, instead I was bombarded with a mess of gay bashing, pedophilia jokes and some incredible whining about the future of software on the Wii. Not only was this episode pretty offensive but it really speaks to who their audience is (12-15 year old males) which, by listening to them, I was pretty convinced that I was listening to a group of teenagers trying to be hip instead of reliable game journalists. The 1up Yours podcast generally is supposed to be an offbeat podcast from EGM/1up but it’s getting really out of hand. While there is some decent (SMALL) snippets of information to be had, most of it is buried by immature console bashing, hate speech and worthless revisions of month old news. This episode in particular the staff makes generalizations about the sexual preference of males who like the Kingdom Hearts franchise and some disturbing assumptions of the sexual appetites of all married males with daughters in the state of Kentucky. They then proceed to take about 15 minutes to discuss the DS game “Hannah Montana” but it ends up being a constant stream of pedophilia and female puberty jokes. The podcast then went onto bashing the Wii (as usual) and one host even stated that he was glad that the Wii is and always will be full of shovelware so he wouldn’t have to be subjected to it on the “Hardcore consoles” because the other consoles have all the games he wants to play. Anyways I’m really not going to be listening to this podcast again, unless there’s something major being announced. Take this entire post up until this point as MY OPINIONS. I’m sure there are plenty of people who are critical of my video podcast and have problems with some of the things that I do on it. I do however, try to not system bash or offend the male population of an entire state.
Turns out that there WAS no information on Boogie, only a slight mention that the Wii version of the new Harry Potter game would be much better than the PS3 version….How confusing.

Make a fool out of yourself with "Boogie"

22 03 2007

Looks like EA’s mystery rhythm game has finally been announced. Using the wiimote, nunchuck and presumably a microphone, players will sing and dance their way to making music videos. Here’s the skinny from the press release:

We’re creating something new and different for gamers of all ages to enjoy; the complete party package where gamers can dance as well as sing,” said Alain Tascan, general manager at developer EA Montreal. “Nintendo’s Wii is an amazing console that really gives us a platform to be creative and to re-think traditional game development.

I would say look forward to a conformation about those other “under NDA” games soon.

Boogie looks like an interesting title and certainty adds fuel to the fire that the headset/microphone will have motion controls. EA was not available to website Eurogamer to comment on how the title would specifically play. Look for more news in the future.
